Epidemiology of Alzheimer's Disease and its Effects

Alzheimer's disease has had the tremendous impact on the affected individuals, caregivers, and society. The etiological factors, other than older age and genetic susceptibility, remain to be determined. Nevertheless, increasing evidence strongly points to the potential risk roles of vascular risk factors and disorders and the possible beneficial roles of psychosocial factors in the pathogenetic process and clinical manifestation of the dementing disorders. Alzheimer's disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder, research in the epidemiology of dementia and AD has made tremendous progress. Alzheimer’s disease is the multifactorial disorder that is determined by genetic and environmental factors as well as their interactions. A Population-based prospective study is the major epidemiological approach to identifying influential factors for chronic multifactorial diseases such as dementia, in which the life-course approach should be taken into consideration. Age is the most powerful determinant of Alzheimer’s disease, and gene mutations contribute to a small proportion of all cases. The cumulative effect of different risk and protective factors over the lifespan, including the effect of complex interactions of genetic susceptibility, psychosocial factors, biological factors, and environmental exposures experienced over the lifespan
